Sydney Style Guide – Paddington

Yes, Sydney sure is a city of style and this inaugural suburb guide turns the spotlight on to the charming inner city haven of Paddington. If you are in need of some escape from the normal tourist hotspots like Sydney Harbour or Bondi Beach and looking to  have a lazy afternoon in a cafe or do some serious luxury shopping then read on.

Paddington is very easy to get to from anywhere in the city and is located on and around the bustling Oxford street, sharing a boundary with its French inspired neighbour of Woollahra. A regular stop on our Sydney tours and once a ‘blue collar’ or workers suburb, the area has been gentrified over many years and is home to some of the most beautifully restored Victorian era terraces in Sydney. A lazy work around the leafy streets on a sunny afternoon is reason enough on its own to visit and will give you a strong sense of what Sydney looked like back in the 1800’s.

If all that sounds like a lot of effort and you just want to so some serious Sydney shopping, then you will find plenty to be happy about. There is a great mix of both high end boutique labels and more mainstream brands and all of the stores are within short distance from each other, with plenty of cafe’s and pubs in between, in case you need to refuel. If it’s Paddington fashion that you after then you might like to head to the Nudie Jeans flagship Sydney store, to Dinasaur Designs, Lisa Ho, Sass & Bide or Come As You Are. If it’s home wares then drop in to Funkis, Gingko Leaf, Opus Design Co and many more. If you are in Sydney for a Saturday and want to experience some local markets then the Paddington Markets should be on your list. They are the longest running market in Sydney, starting in 1973 and gave starts to many local famous fashion designers.

After you have shopped up a solid appetite you will have some of Sydney’s best restaurants nearby so be sure to stay in the neighbourhood and eat locally. Lucio’s is a classic Italian restaurant set on a quiet street, or you could head to Sura By Ku for some modern Asian or just pop in to the Paddington Inn for a low key alternative.

If you are looking to discover more hip local suburbs like Paddington then a tailored Sydney city tour can be put together to show off the precincts that most connect with you. Contact us today to learn more or get some more inspiration on our Sydney travel blog.
